A stranger in the darkness on the roadside

In that brief ever fleeting flash
Of the street light
I was simply heading home that night,
But what is it that you were doing in the dark?
So still and always watching.
Just standing, I'm sure most people wouldn't have noticed you
But I did, and now you linger on the back of my mind
Like that shadow in the corner of my room at night.
Even when I know no one's there, I can't let the feelings go.
Like the raising hairs on the back of my neck, so natural, frightening and cold.
Didn't mean to put myself on high alert, but here I am.
Pulling silently into the driveway with a feeling I cannot stand.
Oh yes I'll lock the door tonight.
You're miles away, and never once thought of me but that's alright.
I'm safe here and I know I am,
But I can't stop my shaking hands.
Ridiculous, unrealistic, impossible thoughts fill this head.
Soon enough I will forget,
When I seen you there on the side of the road
And when my memories let you go,
You be just a phantom somewhere in my dreams
Always just out of sight from where I see.
Always lurking amongst the trees
Once I'm calmed you'll fade away,
And I'll awake to another day.
